Being one of the oldest societies of the arts in Germany, its determination of collecting and making art accessible to everyone has been an inspiration and reaffirmation that good things can be done when resources are placed in the correct hands.
From the very first exhibition of great dutch masters of the 17th century up until today, this society has served its purpose of transmuting human creativity into a continuous festivity; celebrating the artistic endeavours of those in bygone times, as well as the youth to come.
In my painting, some of the most recognisable characters preserved under the Kunstverein gather alongside those representing Bremen, to celebrate 200 years of passion for the arts and the city’s heritage.
Portrayed here are «Psyche» by Antonio Canova (1794), «Portrait of the Artist and his Family» by Nicolás de Largillièrre (1704), «Russian Ballet» by August Mack (1912) and «Selbstbildnis vor grünem Hintergrund mit blauer Iris» by Paula Modersohn-Becker (1907).
In this instance, let the Dance of Death (personified as skeletons) not represent the fragility of life, rather what makes it worth living.
Supporting exhibition organised and curated by Youth For Art for Kunsthalle Bremen’s ”Geburstagsgäste: Monet bis Van Gogh” (07.10.2023 – 18.02.2024) in celebration of the Society of the Arts Bremen/Kunstverein Bremen 200th Anniversary.
