El Copihue y el Esqueleto

Glass paint and lead stripes on glass
40 x 50 cm

The Copihue is endemic to and the national flower of Chile, the country I come from. It is a source of pride and representation of the uniqueness our geographic location provides to our traditions (such as hanging copihue shaped garlands around the house and streets during our national festivities) or that it can’t grow under any other weather nor without its endemic pollinators.
These concepts seem to us, transcendental beyond life, represented as the skeleton, thus positioning this work under the umbrella of an allegorical still life and memento mori.
The technique of stained glass has been used in religious architecture for centuries, and even thought I am not religious, it has a very deep meaning to me and serves as a medium to canonize anything that’s made on it.
For practical reasons I produced this time a fake stained glass that doesn’t need to be fired on a kiln, made of a glass plate, lead stripes and paint for glass.

It currently hangs for our «Turm II» collaborative exhibition until 20.10

The second part of the collaborative project “TURM” takes place in Halle 1 of Speicher IX A. 13.10.2024 – 20.10-2024

As in the previous exhibition in January this year, the metallic structure of a tower returns and appears wrapped in newly created works by fourteen students from the classes of Prof. Katrin von Maltzahn/Anne Fellner and Prof. Heike Kati Barath. The mediums range from traditional painting to mixed-media installations, from prints to audio-visual experiences; a piece of music composed especially for the exhibition is also included.
The unconventional way in which the works are presented reflects the diversity of artistic expression and the importance of arranging different media and concepts in a single structure as a creative exercise.
